Historic Downtown Ellijay

Settled in the foothills of the Chattahoochee National Forest in the Appalachian Mountain Range of Northwest Georgia, this area is abundant in natural beauty, from forests, rivers, lakes and streams, to apple and peach blossoms, wildflowers and all kinds of wild and domesticated animals.

Incorporated December 20th 1834.

The city covers 2.68 square miles.

Ellijay was once located in an area that was a poorly defined

Spanish territory known as Florida.

It probably became English around 1775.

The Cherokee Indians were the first known settlers.

Ellijay retains the name of the original Indian settlement that it was.

Many local rivers and areas retain their Cherokee names.

Ellijay is the county seat of Gilmer County.

Rich mountain has the fourth highest elevation in the state (4081 feet)

Gilmer County was created from part of Cherokee County on December 3, 1832

Ellijay appears in South Carolina records under a slightly different spelling as early as 1755

Apples were added to the economy around 1903 and helped

Gilmer County become less dependant on cotton.
