Settled in the foothills of the Chattahoochee National Forest in the Appalachian
Mountain Range of Northwest Georgia, this area is abundant in natural beauty, from
forests, rivers, lakes and streams, to apple and peach blossoms, wildflowers and
all kinds of wild and domesticated animals.
Incorporated December 20th 1834.
The city covers 2.68 square miles.
Ellijay was once located in an area that was a poorly defined
Spanish territory known as Florida.
It probably became English around 1775.
The Cherokee Indians were the first known settlers.
Ellijay retains the name of the original Indian settlement that it was.
Many local rivers and areas retain their Cherokee names.
Ellijay is the county seat of Gilmer County.
Rich mountain has the fourth highest elevation in the state (4081 feet)
Gilmer County was created from part of Cherokee County on December 3, 1832
Ellijay appears in South Carolina records under a slightly different spelling as
early as 1755
Apples were added to the economy around 1903 and helped
Gilmer County become less dependant on cotton.
